Great coffees from the Eastern Highlands are complex and sweet. Baroida Estate has a super syrupy tropical acidity, reminiscent of passionfruit and pineapple. There is a very pleasant dried fruit and berry sweetness, with notes of goji berry and dried apricot. While the finish is all dark chocolate, brown sugar, and molasses. It is a rich cup with the soothing lingering spice of a good ginger snap cookie.
Baroida's origins are in a 1960's government initiative promoting foreign agriculturists to cultivate land through the Aiyura highlands. Ben and Norma Colbran purchased the estate, which is now run by their son, Nicol and grandchildren, Chris and Rhett. The 220-hectare plantation contains 29 smaller plots, each growing a single varietal. Crops are washed with disk pulpers, fermented for 36 hours and then blended.
